Het zevende album van het uit het noorden van Engeland afkomstige The Beautiful South is weer een pareltje. "Painting it red" telt maar liefst zeventien smaakvol gearrangeerde jazzy soulpopsongs, van een onmiskenbaar Brits randje voorzien door de stemmen van Paul Heaton en Jacqueline Abbott. Het typische Engelse geluid van de band is waarschijnlijk de oorzaak van het feit dat The Beautiful South werelberoemd is in eigen land, maar in Nederland nooit is doorgebroken. Dat ze daar wel recht op hebben bewijzen ze met schitterende nummers als "Closer than most", "Just checkin'", "Baby please go" en "10,000 Feet". (W.vd.Z.)_
