Igor Stravinski The Rake's progress

Album

Tijdens een bezoek aan het Chicago Art Institute in 1947 raakte Igor Stravinsky onder de indruk van een aantal gravures van William Hogarth. De moralistische afbeeldingen weerspiegelden de groteske neergang van een 18e-eeuwse losbol. Stravinsky dacht dat het onderwerp geschikt was voor een opera. Op aanraden van zijn buurman Aldous Huxley zocht hij contact met de dichter Auden. De ontmoeting verliep succesvol, want al gauw bleek dat de beroemde componist en de al niet minder bekende dichter uitstekend met elkaar overweg konden. Dat Auden het libretto uiteindelijk zou schrijven met behulp van een andere losbol (Audens beschermeling Chester Kallman) leidde bij Stravinsky overigens wel tot enige irritatie. Deze uitvoering van "The rake's progress" laat een indrukwekkende cast zien: Ian Bostridge (als de losbol), Deborah York (diens verloofde), Bryn Terfel (als de sinistere Nick Shadow) en Anne Sofie von Otter (als de vrouw met de baard).
