Igor Stravinski L'oiseau feu

Album

Van de drie balletten van Stravinsky in de uitvoering door de San Francisco Symphony onder leiding van Michael Tilson Thomas behoeven de 'klassiekers' "L'oiseau de feu" en "Le sacre du printemps" weinig toelichting. Des te opvallender is de aanwezigheid van het ballet "Persephone" voor spreekstem, tenor, koor en orkest, dat in 1933 geschreven werd in opdracht van Ida Rubinstein. De realisatie van deze productie leidde tot een moeizame samenwerking met librettist Andre Gide, die Stravinsky publiekelijk bekritiseerde vanwege diens toonzetting. Stravinsky reageerde hierop met de legendarische woorden: "een neus is niet gemaakt, een neus is!", om zo duidelijk te maken dat hij de muziek alleen zo had kunnen componeren. Tot de uitvoerenden van "Persephone" behoren ondermeer tenor Stuart Neill en het San Francisco Symphony Chorus. (H.J.)_
