Het debuutalbum van The Velvet Underground met de Duitse chanteuse Nico eindigt steevast hoog in de verkiezing van beste plaat aller tijden. De primitieve liedjes van rocker Lou Reed gaan hierop een verbond aan met de minimalistische ideeën van violist John Cale. De mysterieuze zang van Nico geeft de plaat extra charme. Het artwork (de beroemde hoes met de banaan) werd verzorgd door niemand minder dan Andy Warhol. Het album is nu uitgebracht als dubbelaar in een schitterende ‘deluxe’ verpakking. Op het tweede schijfje staat het volledige album in de originele monomix, aangevuld met een selectie van de beste liedjes van Nico’s soloalbum Chelsea Girl. (MS)
