Philip Catherine Meeting colours

Album

De gitaar van Philip Catherine zingt en swingt en laat daarmee horen hoezeer hij is beïnvloed door het spel van Django Reinhardt. Op Meeting Colours wordt hij begeleid door het Brussels Jazz Orchestra dat arrangementen van de Belgische trompettist Bert Joris uitvoert. Met deze cd wilde Catherine de grenzen van zijn kwaliteiten als componist verleggen. En daar is hij bijzonder goed in geslaagd. Met uitzondering van In A Sentimental Mood van Duke Ellington zijn alle composities van eigen hand en variëren van melancholiek tot uptempo swing. Dit levert een groot aantal magistrale momenten op waarin orkest en gitaar een natuurlijke eenheid vormen. Vanaf de eerste tonen van het relaxte On The Ground tot het langzaam opgebouwde Dance For Victor (met een orkestrale uitsmijter!) blijft Meeting Colours boeien door de veelzijdigheid in de composities. In het nummer Piano Groove laat Catherine nog even horen waarom hij indertijd 'young Django' werd genoemd door Charles Mingus. (AD)
