Benjamin Britten Les illuminations, op.18

Album

Voordat de sterke schouders van Peter Pears zich aandienen, had Britten een meer dan warme belangstelling voor zeven jaar jongere Wolfgang ('Wulff') Scherchen (de zoon van de dirigent), aan wie de componist eens zijn regenjas had uitgeleend. In 1939 droeg Britten het broeierige lied Antique uit Les Illuminations op aan 'K.W.H.S.' (de initialen van Wulff Scherchen). De cyclus is een soort halfslachtige 'coming out', waarbij Britten zich enigszins verschuilt achter het decadente symbolisme van ervaringsdeskundige Arthur Rimbaud; al te expliciete verwijzingen naar 'bestiale liefkozingen' werden discreet verwijderd. Al meteen aan het begin van de cyclus doet Britten de deur tot zijn innerlijk resoluut op slot: 'Ik alleen heb de sleutel tot deze wilde parade'. Les Illuminations (oorspronkelijk voor sopraan) wordt hier gezongen in de tenorversie voor Peter Pears. Toby Spence kleurt heel mooi met zijn falset in het prachtige Being Beauteous (vreemd genoeg koos Britten hier voor een Engelse titel). Deze SACD bevat, naast Les Illuminations en de genoemde Variations, ook de Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings op.31. (HJ)
