Gustav Mahler Symphony no.8

Voor Gustav Mahler was een symfonie een uitdrukking van alles: van zowel het banale als het verhevene, van de fnuikende realiteit van dit leven, maar ook de droom van een eeuwig (en naar verwachting dus beter) leven. In zijn Achtste Symfonie deed Mahler, in navolging van Beethovens Negende en zijn eigen Tweede en Derde, een beroep op zangers en koor. Maar liefst acht solisten, een dubbelkoor en een kinderkoor versterken het toch al omvangrijke orkest om het visioen van 'das Ewig-Weibliche' (sleutelwoord uit de slotscène van Goethes Faust) gestalte te geven. Het zijn dan ook niet langer menselijke stemmen die klinken, maar 'planeten en zonnen' (aldus Mahler in een brief uit 1906 aan Willem Mengelberg). De symfonie dankt zijn bijnaam 'Sinfonie der Tausend' aan het feit dat ruim duizend zangers en instrumentalisten bijdroegen aan de première. Voor deze opname keerde Simon Rattle terug naar het orkest waarmee hij wereldfaam verwierf: de City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Het gaat hier om compilaties van live opnames, gemaakt tijdens een drietal concerten in de Symphony Hall in Birmingham, 2004. (HJ)
