In beschouwingen over Mendelssohn wordt vaak het jeugdige genie van de Sommernachtstraum en het Oktet geplaatst tegenover de Biedermeierromantiek van de Lieder ohne Worte en het protestantse chauvinisme van de oratoria en de Lobgesang. Julian Haylock doet dat ook in het booklet van deze cd: 'Mendelssohn possesed a talent which was almost inexhaustible in terms of its promise and potential, yet he lacked the inner determination to develop his powers to their fullest extent.' Een beetje streng is dit oordeel wel: de (schijnbaar) eenvoudige lyriek van het Ave Maria en van sommige strofen van Aus tiefe Not zijn ongetwijfeld bedoeld om op een makkelijke manier het publiek te behagen, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat de 'minor composer's' uit die tijd tot vergelijkbare prestaties in staat waren. Het fraaie Ave Maria (het tweede deel van Drei geistliche Chöre op.23) is een unicum in Mendelssohn's overwegend protestantese oeuvre. In de bundel Drei geistliche Chöre op.23 wordt dit motet geflankeerd door het voornoemde Aus tiefer Not (een koraal dat eveneens een onverwachte rol speelt in Mendelssohns Derde Sonate voor orgel) en Mitten wir im Leben sind.
