Benjamin Britten Simple symphony

Deze fraaie bloemlezing geeft een mooi inzicht in Brittens belangrijkste preoccupaties: volksmuziek, Britse muziek vanaf Elizabeth I tot en met Purcell, verlokkingen en gevaren van de kindertijd en de raadsels rond slapen en dromen. De Simple Symphony uit 1934 gaat terug op Brittens vroegste muzikale ingevingen. Nog verbazingwekkender echter is de virtuositeit waarmee de al weer iets oudere Benjamin (21 jaar om precies te zijn) het materiaal uit zijn kindertijd wist te recyclen. Uit Brittens laatste levensjaar stamt de bewerking voor altviool en strijkorkest van de in 1950 gecomponeerde Lachrymae voor altviool en piano. De titel is uiteraard een verwijzing naar John Dowland, waarbij het in het bijzonder gaat om diens lied If my complaints could passions move. Net als bij de Nocturnal voor gitaar werkt alles toe naar Dowlands eigen melodie en harmonisatie. Tegen het einde van de Lachrymae klinkt Dowlands muziek dromerig en ver weg, alsof een gambaconsort vanuit oeroude tijden naklinkt. Daarnaast verwijst de zesde variatie naar de nog steeds populaire evergreen Flow my tears. (HJ)
