Ralph Vaughan Williams Songs of travel

Album

De Songs of Travel (naar teksten van Robert Louis Stevenson) behoren tot Ralph Vaughan Williams vroegste successen. De liederen vonden hun weg naar heel wat huishoudens en studentenkamers dankzij een tweedelige uitgave. Pas in 1960 verscheen de cyclus in een ééndelige uitgave (zoals Vaughan Williams het ook bedoeld had), waarbij het afsluitende lied 'I have trod the upward and the downward slope' als epiloog werkte. In dit vroege werk horen we nog steeds romantische invloeden; de meer volwassen Vaughan Williams met zijn voorkeur voor het Engelse volkslied en de Elizabethaanse muziek moest zich nog ontwikkelen. Toch horen we ook hier al de visionaire berusting van de latere Vaughan Williams middels 'The infinite shining heavens' en 'Bright is the ring of words'. Bariton Christopher Maltman zingt eveneens het prachtige Brendon Hill en Six songs from 'A Shropshire Lad' van George Butterworth: één van die talloze componisten die zich liet inspireren door de sombere puberteitsrêverieën van Housman.
