Te Deum and jublilate

Album

'Service' is een term waarmee in de Anglicaanse liturgie vooral verwezen wordt naar het morgen- en avondgebed. Een service kan uit allerlei muzikale elementen bestaan. Zo behoren het Te Deum en Jubilate (psalm 100) tot het ochtendgebed, terwijl het Magnificat (lofzang van Maria) en Nunc Dimittis (lofzang van Simeon) tot het avondgebed behoren. Volgens een vrome, maar al lang achterhaalde legende zou het Te Deum een improvisatie zijn van de bisschop Ambrosius en diens catechisant Augustinus tijdens de doop van laatstgenoemde. Terug naar de Service: compositorische bijdragen aan de genoemde getijden worden meestal bijeengehouden door een bepaalde stijl en toonsoort; vandaar zulke overkoepelende titels als Collegium sancti Johannis Cantabrigiense, Collegium regale, for New College, Oxford, for St Paul's Cathedral, etc.. Onderdelen kunnen dan weer aangegeven worden als Te Deum and Jubilate (Collegium Regale). Al deze voorbeelden zijn ontleend aan Herbert Howells: een componist die zich op dit terrein zowel kwalitatief als kwantitatief wist te onderscheiden. De onderhavige vier cd's tellende bloemlezing bevat tevens bijdragen van Gibbons, Boyce, S.S. Wesely, Stanford, Ireland, Wood, Elgar, Britten en Vaughan Williams. (HJ)
