John Dowland Semper Dowland semper dolens

Album

John Dowland (1563-1626) hanteerde zijn gal middels het zingen van ‘In darkness let me dwell’, daarmee demonstrerend dat de muziek de prozac van zijn tijd was. Het muzikaal zwelgen in melancholie was niet het toegeven aan perverse genoegens, maar een manier om verlichting te verkrijgen in een bekommerd bestaan vol pest, oorlog en stadsbranden. In die tijd was muziek een belangrijk middel voor het uitbannen van Saturnale invloeden. Muziek ‘doth extenuate fears and furies (...) it cures all irksomeness and heaviness of the soul’, aldus ervaringsdeskundige Robert Burton (1577-1640) in zijn The Anatomy of Melancholy. Niet minder klassiek is Biathanatos van John Donne (1573-1631), waarin eveneens begrip wordt gevraagd voor suïcidale neigingen. Natuurlijk kende deze deken van St. Pauls’ het Book of Common Prayer (waarin zelfdoding nadrukkelijk verboden wordt), maar dat weerhield hem er niet van een soort rituele mortificatie te ondergaan door gedurende zijn laatste dagen alvast in zijn doodskist te gaan liggen. John Dowland bevond zich met zijn Flow My Tears en zijn Semper Dowland Semper Dolens dus in goed gezelschap. Muziek is overigens niet de enige remedie tegen zwartgalligheid. Burtons oplossing: kook de kop (inclusief huid, haar en oogballen) van een ram die nog nooit een ooi heeft gedekt en kruid deze met kaneel, gember, nootmuskaat en/of kruidnagelen.
