Album

Het Concerto Grosso is een 18e eeuwse concertvorm, waarbij een klein groepje instrumenten (concertino) concerteert tegenover een grotere groep (ripieno of concerto grosso). Bepalend waren de Concerti Grossi op.6 van Corelli, die in 1714 in Amsterdam zijn gepubliceerd. Het genre vond navolging in de Concerti Grossi op.6 van Handel. Deze collectie behoort niet alleen tot hoogtepunten van de barok, ze vormen eveneens een unicum in het oeuvre van de componist. De set van 12 concerten werd als geheel ontworpen en gecomponeerd gedurende september en oktober van 1739. Geen van Handels voorafgaande instrumentale publicaties had een dergelijke samenhang bezeten. Waarschijnlijk werd Handels productiviteit en doortastendheid mede gestimuleerd door de steeds terugkerende problemen met uitgevers. Zo was Handels eerste instrumentale muziek in druk, de Concerti Grossi op.3 (1734, ook wel abusievelijk als hoboconcerten aangeduid), waarschijnlijk een pirateneditie, waarbij de door winstbejag gedreven uitgever Walsh verantwoordelijk was voor de samenstelling. We horen Handels op.3 en op.6 in fraaie en transparante uitvoeringen van de in Boston residerende Handel and Haydn Society onder leiding van Christopher Hogwood. Het gaat hier om heruitgaven van opnames uit 1988-1992. (HJ)
