Benjamin Britten The prince of the pagodas-suite

Toen Benjamin Britten en Peter Pears eind jaren 1930 aan hun ballingschap in de VS begonnen, maakten zij kennis met de Canadese etnomusicoloog en componist Colin McPhee. Deze had juist een zesjarige studieperiode op het eiland Bali beëindigd, waarbij hij nauwgezet de Balinese gamelan had bestudeerd. Van Balinese muziek had McPhee transcripties voor twee piano's verzorgd, waarvan er op deze cd een drietal te horen zijn in historische uitvoeringen (1941) van McPhee en Britten. De muziek van Bali was van directe invloed op McPhee's eigen composities, al leidde dit gelukkig niet tot goedkoop exotisme. Zo is het orkestwerk Tabuh-Tabuhan (een 'toccata' uit 1936 voor orkest en twee piano's) een zeer geslaagd stuk, dat vanwege de minimalistische drive net zo goed in 1986 als in 1936 geschreven had kunnen zijn. Verder bevat deze cd een suite van de Britten-kenners Donald Mitchell en Mervyn Cooke naar Brittens weinig bekende ballet The Prince of the Pagodas. Het is Britten nooit gelukt om een fatsoenlijke suite uit dit ballet samen te stellen; vandaar dat Mitchell en Cooke dit in 1997 alsnog gedaan hebben. (HJ)
