In 1954 maakte de Amerikaanse zangeres Marilyn Horne haar operadebuut. Naar aanleiding van het 50-jarig jubileum zijn twee cd's uitgegeven met opnamen uit de jaren 1964-1984: een overzicht van een indrukwekkende carrière. Horne werd geboren in 1934 en kreeg al op zeer jonge leeftijd zanglessen. Toen zij 12 jaar was, werd zij lid van het Roger Wagner Chorale in Los Angelos, wat haar acht jaar later de opdracht opleverde om haar zangstem te verlenen aan Dororthy Dandridge in de film Carmen Jones. Midden jaren vijftig ging Horne naar Europa, waar zij verder ging met het zingen van sopraanrollen. De omslag naar mezzosopraan maakte zij pas in 1960. Drie jaar later zong ze de rol van Arsace in Semiramide. De wereld leerde een overweldigende coloratuurmezzo kennen. Hier lag haar weg. Horne is op haar best als expressie bereikt kan worden door technische virtuositeit. Adembenemend klinkt de eerste toon van Dove Sei, Amato Bene uit Händels Rodelinda: muisstil ingezet, nauwelijks hoorbaar, zwelt de toon langzaam aan om met evenveel beheersing weer langzaam uit te doven. Jammer dat Horne in een tijd leefde dat het operarepertoire vooral bestond uit 19e-eeuwse romantische opera. Had zij in deze tijd geleefd, had ze het ene magnifieke barokalbum na het andere kunnen produceren. Toch zullen liefhebbers van het beroemde duo Joan Sutherland en Marilyn Horne niet klagen. De opnamen van ondermeer Bellini-opera's die het tweetal met elkaar maakte, zijn nog steeds bijzonder geliefd. (CP)
