Nadat de Nieuw-Zeelandse regisseur Peter Jackson de onverfilmbaar geachte Lord Of The Rings-trilogie met veel succes op het witte doek had gebracht, kon Jackson zich richten op zijn ultieme droom: het verfilmen van King Kong, de klassieke avonturenfilm uit 1933 over de reuzenaap Kong. In december 2005 was het dan zover, en zag Jackson - met succes - zijn droom gerealiseerd. Voor de soundtrack werd aanvankelijk Howard Shore aangetrokken, die ook de muziek schreef voor The Lord Of The Rings, maar uiteindelijk werd hij vervangen door James Newton Howard, die in korte tijd de epische muziek voor dit spektakelstuk moest schrijven.
