“Ik had me niet gerealiseerd dat we Hank Williams hadden binnengehaald,” schijnt Roger McGuinn te hebben verzucht na de komst van Gram Parsons bij The Byrds. Parsons wist al snel de overige bandleden te overtuigen van dezelfde visie – country mengen met rock – die hij eerder met The International Submarine Band na had gejaagd. Sweetheart Of The Rodeo mag in de oren van de gemiddelde rockliefhebber klinken als onvervalste country, voor de echte countrypurist was de muziek behoorlijk progressief. Sweetheart Of The Rodeo dreigde dan ook door geen van beide kampen op waarde te worden geschat. Pas jaren later werd het erkend als een van de eerste countryrockplaten, en een wegbereider van latere succesgroepen als The Eagles en Poco . Dat de plaat er sowieso kwam was al een klein wonder. Doordat Parsons andere contractuele verplichtingen had, moesten op het laatste moment zijn leadvocalen worden vervangen door die van McGuinn. Gelukkig is zijn stem wel te horen op het beste liedje van de plaat: Hickory Wind. (MS)
