Eels Blinking lights

Album

Eels, de band rondom de mistroostige E (Mark Oliver Everett), heeft sinds het debuut Beautiful Freak vele ups en downs gekend. Electro Shock Blues ('98) was qua gemoedstoestand het dieptepunt, maar daarmee ook één van de mooiste platen van Eels. E blijkt altijd weer in staat om zijn misère om te zetten in breekbare liedjes en houdt tegelijk de deur open voor experimentele momenten. Blinking Lights And Other Revelations is een dubbel-cd met in totaal 33 nummers. Zoals gewoonlijk is E het leven weer helemaal zat, bijvoorbeeld in het toepasselijk getitelde Suicide Life. Nog zo'n persoonlijk juweeltje is Son Of A Bitch, waarin zijn ouders er van langs krijgen. Op Going Fetal schreeuwt Tom Waits (gastmuzikant) het uit zoals we van hem gewend zijn. Peter Buck van R.E.M. deed al op een eerder Eels-album mee en ook dit keer is hij van de partij (To Lick Your Boots). Opvallende gast is ook John Sebastian van The Lovin' Spoonful. Op Dusk: A Peach In The Orchard bespeelt hij zijn autoharp. (JdD)
