Op 24 februari 1969 gaf Johnny Cash een optreden in de beruchte San Quentin gevangenis in Californië. Dertien maanden eerder had Cash al opgetreden in een andere gevangenis, de Folsom State Prison. Het album van dit optreden, At Folsom Prison (1968), werd een groot succes. Johhny Cash At San Quentin deed het zelfs nog beter een haalde de eerste plaats in de Billboard albumlijst. Op de Legacy Edition van deze klassieke plaat staan dertien nummers die nog niet eerder werden uitgebracht, niet alleen van Cash zelf maar ook van Carl Perkins , The Statler Brothers en The Carter Family . Inclusief een dvd met een documentaire over het historische concert van Cash in de oudste gevangenis van Californië, de enige in de staat met dodencellen en een gaskamer. (IV)
