Benjamin Britten was geen Harry Smith. Brittens benadering van het volkslied had evenmin iets te maken met de etnologische benadering van Vaughan Williams of Bartók. Britten was meer verwant aan bepaalde tendensen in het vroeg 19e-eeuwse Duits-romantische lied, waarbij het kunstlied de eenvoud van het volkslied als model nam (denk bijvoorbeeld aan de Winterreise van Schubert, waarvan Pears en Britten trouwens prachtige vertolkingen hebben gegeven). Met sentimentele verlangens naar het pre-industriële Engeland hebben Brittens volksliedbewerkingen ook niet altijd iets te maken. Zo bevat de tweede Volume een verzameling Franse liederen, terwijl de postuum gepubliceerde collectie Tom Bowling... het Duitse volksliedje Da unten im Tale (The Stream in the Valley) bevat (eveneens getoonzet door Brahms). Brittens eerste bundel ontstond in de Verenigde Staten, waarbij ieder lied aan een Amerikaanse vriend werd opgedragen. Meteen al het allereerste lied is geen volkspoëzie in eigenlijke zin: het gaat hier om het spookachtige liefdesliedje The Salley Gardens van Yeats. De melodie is overigens wel traditioneel Iers.
