Veel compilatie-cd's vormen zo'n lukrake mix van snapshots, genres en middelen, dat ze eigenlijk geen serieuze aandacht waard zijn. Hier echter gaat het om de artistieke nalatenschap van Richard Hickox, de dirigent die in 2008 op zestigjarige leeftijd overleed. Zijn gigantische discografie besloeg alleen al bij Chandos zo'n ruim 280 items. Zijn grootste triomfen beleefde hij in de Britse muziek: de cd première van Vaughan Williams A London Symphony in de oorspronkelijke versie, tevens Gramophone Awards voor Brittens War Requiem, Delius' Sea Drift & Waltons Troilus and Cressida. Hickox wist zich echter net zo makkelijk te onderscheiden met de continentale muziek van Beethoven, Haydn, Dvorák, Schubert, Hummel en Verdi. Verder droeg Hickox bij aan de herontdekking van Broadway-componist Menotti, en zo zijn er nog wel een paar wapenfeiten te noemen. Voor de inmiddels opgerichte Richard Hickox Foundation zit er dan ook weinig anders op dan haar doelstellingen zo breed mogelijk te formuleren. Naast de promotie van Britse muziek geeft de stichting ook ondersteuning aan jonge dirigenten en zangers. (HJ)
