In 2010 staat het befaamde Kronos Quartet ruim 25 jaar in de voorhoede van de nieuwe muziek. Deze tien cd-box vormt dan ook maar het topje van de ijsberg van de activiteiten die dit nog altijd ambitieuze kwartet ontplooit. Samen met het Arditti Kwartet peuterde het Kronos Quartet het kwartetgenre in de jaren zeventig los uit de op dat moment in hun ogen verstofte traditie. Hierbij richtte het Kronos Quartet zich vooral op de nieuwe Amerikaanse muziek, met Black Angels van George Crumb als een van de sleutelwerken. Hierin worden de grenzen van het traditionele strijkkwartet opgerekt zodat de musici naast het bespelen van gongs en ander slagwerk ook moeten neuriën, zingen en schreeuwen. Daarnaast heft het Kronos Quartet ook graag de scheidslijnen op tussen verschillende muzieksoorten zoals klassiek en jazz. Ruim vierhonderd composities brachten ze in première waaronder werken van Morton Feldman, Philip Glass, Steve Reich en John Zorn. Vanaf de jaren negentig doet het visuele aspect zijn intrede. Het is wederom Black Angels dat in een volledig geregisseerde versie het uitgangspunt vormt voor visueel uitgewerkte composities, zoals Tan Duns Ghost Opera. Nog steeds behoort het Kronos Quartet tot de meest inspirerende ensembles voor zowel componisten als publiek. (JWvR)
