Georg Friedrich Händel Music for the Chapel Royal

Deze cd bevat muziek voor hetzelfde koor en dezelfde locatie waarvoor de muziek ook oorspronkelijk bedoeld was. Alhoewel, dezelfde locatie. In Handels tijd stond de term Chapel Royal voor iets wat tot de huishouding van het hof behoorde. Een duidelijke plek was er voor die Chapel Royal niet altijd aan te wijzen: het instituut droeg in verschillende koninklijke kapellen bij aan de liturgie, al naar gelang het de koning of koningin behaagde. Waarschijnlijk zal Handel de muziek hebben uitgevoerd in de kapel van St. Jame’s Palace, de oudste Britse hofkapel die nu nog in gebruik is, en het is dan ook deze kapel waarvan men voor de onderhavige uitvoeringen gebruik heeft gemaakt. In Handels tijd was de Chapel Royal eigenlijk al over haar grootste roem heen. In de twee eeuwen daarvoor hadden illustere componisten als Fayrfax, Tallis, Tye, Byrd, Gibbons, Weelkes, Morley, Purcell en Blow aan het instituut bijgedragen. (HJ)
