In het label Kent heeft de betere soul uit de jaren zestig en zeventig een onvermoeibaar pleitbezorger. Ontelbare heruitgaven werden in de loop der jaren gewijd aan vaak bijna vergeten soulzangers, -zangeressen en bands. Deze platen werden ooit uitgebracht door kleine plaatselijke labels als Stax, Hi en Fame in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Het was muziek die veel rauwer en funky klonk dan bijvoorbeeld de gestileerde popsoul van Motown, en was gericht op een volwassen publiek. In de dansnummers kwamen niet zelden seksuele toespelingen voor en in de vaak hartverscheurende ballads werd naar hartenlust gerefereerd aan overspel en geldproblemen. Veel van deze ‘southern soul’ was slechts plaatselijk succesvol en wist de Europese markt nooit te bereiken. Nadeel van veel Kent-compilaties is dat de samenstellers in hun drang naar volledigheid nogal eens te veel restmateriaal toevoegen. Deze compilatie, waarop louter de beste ‘southern soul’ is te horen, is dan ook een zeer welkome aanvulling op de catalogus. Op drie cd’s komen zowel de bekende (Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Etta James, Otis Redding) als de obscure namen voorbij, met werkelijk geen enkel overbodig nummer. (MS)
