Florent Schmitt Psaume XLVII

Album

In 1904 werd Florent Schmitt geacht zich in de Villa Medici te bevinden om zich als prijswinnaar van de Prix de Rome aan zijn ‘envoi de Rome’ te wijden. Hij was echter maar zelden ter plaatse, omdat hij liever elders muzikale indrukken opdeed. Zo was hij toevallig het jaar daarvoor in Istanbul getuige van exotische ceremoniën rond de Ottomaanse sultan. Deze oriëntaalse pracht vertaalde hij vervolgens in zijn Psaume XLVII. Datzelfde barbaarse elan horen we ook in het ballet La tragédie de Salomé dat in 1907 voltooid werd, zes maanden na de Parijse première van Strauss’ Salome. Meer nog dan door Strauss werd de partituur beïnvloed door Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade. Vandaar dat Schmitt hogelijk geprezen werd door Rimsky-Korsakovs beroemdste leerling Igor Stravinski. Het is zelfs denkbaar dat een en ander van Schmitts ballet van invloed is geweest op Stravinski’s scandaleuze Le Sacre du Printemps. De liefde zou niet blijven duren: volgens Stravinski’s assistent Robert Craft zijn Stravinski’s latere opmerkingen over Schmitt niet geschikt voor publiciteit. Waarschijnlijk was Stravinski gewoon jaloers toen Schmitt, en niet hij, in 1936 als lid werd toegelaten aan het Institut de France als opvolger van Paul Dukas. (HJ)
