Nico Muhly is een componist die zich op het grensgebied tussen klassiek en pop beweegt. Hij is kennelijk zo veelbelovend dat Decca hem met twee (tegelijkertijd uit te brengen) internationale releases durft te promoten als ‘America’s leading young composer’. Het hier besproken album – A Good Understanding – betreft deels religieuze muziek voor de kerkelijke praktijk. Dat zit zo: al vanaf jonge leeftijd was Nico Muhly een enthousiast koorzanger, die zo ongeveer het gehele Anglicaanse repertoire van de 16e tot de 21ste eeuw gezongen heeft. Zijn Bright Mass with Canons en de First Service (voor Girton en Clare colleges in Cambridge) passen perfect in deze traditie. Deze functionele muziek klinkt beslist sympathiek, al verwacht je als luisteraar soms iets extras. Zo’n overstijgend moment is er bijvoorbeeld wel in het Gloria van het fraaie Senex Puerum Portabat.
