Het kerstfeest wordt al vele eeuwen gevierd, op verschillende manieren in diverse culturen en landen. De klassiek geschoolde cellist Yo-Yo Ma houdt ervan klassieke, populaire en wereldmuziekgenres met elkaar te vermengen. Voor zijn kerstalbum Songs Of Joy & Peace omringde hij zich daarom met een kleurrijke groep van oude en nieuwe muzikale vrienden om gebroederlijk het kerstfeest te vieren. Op elk van de 22 tracks speelt cellist Yo-Yo Ma afwisselend samen met ‘folkies’ als James Taylor, Edgar Meyer en Chris Thile en Alison Krauss of met jazzadepten als Diana Krall, Dave & Matt Brubeck, Joshua Redman en Paquito D’Rivera. Wereldmuziekgasten zijn ondermeer de Galicische Cristina Pato, de Brazilianen Sergio & Odair Assad en Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. De rode draad van het album is de canon Dona Nobis Pacem, dat telkens weer anders klinkt. Songs Of Joy & Peace is een ultiem kerstalbum: de smaakvolle en verfijnde muziek is uitermate geschikt als achtergrondmuziek tijdens het kerstdiner of om stil van te genieten bij een knapperend haardvuur.
