Georg Friedrich Händel Between heaven and earth

Album

In de inleiding van haar album Between Heaven & Earth beschrijft Sandrine Piau haar Händel-programma als volgt: “Mijn doel vandaag is om deze stemmen uit de hemel te verbinden met die van ons hart, in een ballet dat de tegenstellingen benadrukt die ons verscheuren. De schittering van de triomfante engel krijgt een echo in het lijden van Cleopatra voor de poort van de dood” (in het Frans klinkt het mooier). De inleiding toont Piau’s intelligentie en gevoel voor poëzie, die we bij het beluisteren van het album terughoren. De sopraan opent haar recital weliswaar met een aria vol coloratuurvuurwerk uit Händels Italiaanse periode, maar de rest van de aria’s wordt gekenmerkt door mooie melodieën met een boodschap. Minder drama, meer poëzie en filosofische bespiegelingen. Het gaat hier dan ook niet om opera-aria’s maar om oratoriumaria’s. Het is een emotioneel mooi uitgebalanceerd programma, dat aangenaam onderbroken wordt door een aantal instrumentale stukken en een duet met de tenor Topi Lehtipuu. Een aangename afwisseling ook op de vele Händel-recitals in omloop waarin het coloratuurvuurwerk je om de oren slaat. (CP)
