Bill Frisell Disfarmer

Wat is het tegenovergestelde van een boer? In het Engels zou dit een Disfarmer zijn. Achter deze naam hield de Amerikaanse fotograaf Michael Meyers (niet te verwarren met de slachtende psychopaat uit de Halloween filmserie) zich schuil. In de tijd tussen de Great Depression en het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog fotografeerde hij zijn dorpsgenoten in korrelig zwart-wit in zijn studio in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Door de algehele sfeer van onverwachte intimiteit in deze portretten wordt Meyers beschouwd als een belangrijk Amerikaans kunstenaar. Toen gitarist Bill Frisell met deze prenten werd geconfronteerd wilde hij er gelijk een soundtrack bij maken of, zoals hij zelf zegt: ‘The sound of him looking through the lens’. Als geen ander is Frisell geschikt om de geest van het Amerikaanse platteland op muzikale wijze te vangen, aangezien hij altijd verwoede pogingen doet om americana met jazz te vermengen. Dit keer wordt hij ondersteund door mandoline, viool en bas in een zesentwintigtal kleine muzikale portretten die hart en ziel van Disfarmer treffend beschrijven. (AD)
