Het instrument dat in het Engels bekend staat als ‘sackbut’, wordt in de Van Dale vertaald als ‘schuiftrombone’, maar staat ook wel bekend als renaissance- of baroktrombone. Deze instrumenten zijn te herkennen aan een veel mildere klank dan de moderne trombone, die opvallend scherper en helderder is. Wim Becu is al meer dan een kwart eeuw één van de belangrijkste bespelers van deze historische trombones, en op deze cd laat hij het instrument schitteren. Begeleid door zijn ensemble Oltremontano speelt hij bijzonder repertoire van het begin van de zeventiende eeuw. Centraal staat de bastrombone, maar we horen ook alt- en tenortrombones. Op het bijzondere Viderunt omnes van Nikolaj Zielinski horen we de drie trombones eindelijk eens samen, gecombineerd met de corneto: een prachtige combinatie! Voor de liefhebbers én voor mensen die deze instrumenten nog niet kennen is deze cd een geweldige bloemlezing. (TC)
