Na de grote successen van Pet Sounds (vooral artistiek) en Good Vibrations (artistiek én commercieel) waren alle ogen in 1966 gericht op The Beach Boys. De groep rondom mastermind Brian Wilson was onder critici en luisteraars eventjes populairder dan The Beatles , gek genoeg juist in Engeland. Zo ontstond er een hevige buzz omtrent een nieuw album dat Smile moest gaan heten. Wilson zocht naarstig naar ‘het nieuwe geluid’ om de positie aan de top te behouden. Deze zoektocht zou ondanks maanden studiowerk nooit afkomen. De plaat werd uiteindelijk geschrapt, maar de mythe bleef voortbestaan. Diverse schrijvers publiceerden over het onfortuinlijke project en op de zwarte markt vonden uitgelekte Smile -opnames gretig aftrek. Smile werd zo een soort heilige graal van de popmuziek. Toen Wilson in 2004 een compleet nieuwe versie maakten, werd de roep om de originele incomplete opnames sterker dan ooit. The Smile Sessions presenteert ze in volle glorie en maakt duidelijk dat Smile ook in onvolledige vorm een meesterwerk is. Deze ‘teenage symphony to God’ is een heerlijke mix van alles van doo-wop tot aan proto-hardrock. De onvoltooide puzzel is nog altijd ongeëvenaard. (JE)
