Phil Spector zal altijd bekend staan om zijn Wall of Sound. Zijn keuze om popnummers te voorzien van een enorme muur van geluid, biedt in de 21e eeuw nog steeds inspiratie aan artiesten en producers. De Amerikaan verwierf faam in het begin van de jaren zestig als producer van damesgroepen als The Crystals, Bobb B. Soxx And The Blue Jeans en The Ronettes. De zes albums die hij met hen opnam voor zijn label Philles zijn nu in een luxe box heruitgebracht, het merendeel voor het eerst op cd. Dat is niet zo vreemd, want albums hadden nooit de voorkeur van Spector, die hij ooit omschreef als ‘twee hits en dan tien stukken vuilnis’. Dat mag lichtelijk overdreven zijn, deze box bevat nogal wat overtollig vet. Wat moeten we bijvoorbeeld met drie identieke versies van Uptown en On Broadway verspreid over drie schijfjes? Goed, de uitgave biedt een aardige bonus disc met b-kantjes en ziet er puntgaaf uit, maar verder is het niet meer dan een iets chiquere en vooral veel duurdere Greatest Hits van het eerste werk van Spector. De mooie Wall of Sound ten spijt. (JE)
