Qua uiterlijk heeft hij wel iets van Jamie Cullum (eveneens Decca/Universal). Het zal toch niet zo zijn dat dít de reden is waarom Decca Nico Muhly zo nadrukkelijk in de etalage plaatst. Goed, dat wat de uiterlijke schijn betreft. Verder lijkt Nico Muhly alles mee te hebben. Hij laveert moeiteloos tussen uiteenlopende muzikale stijlen, waardoor hij zowel de popliefhebber, de kerkganger als het klassieke publiek weet te bloeien. En Decca zorgt wel voor de wereldwijde distributie van zijn cd’s. Maar het belangrijkste is toch wel dat al dat verblindende succes Muhly er niet van weerhoudt om intelligente en onderhoudende muziek te componeren. Aan zijn discografie kan nu ook het ballet I Drink The Air Before Me worden toegevoegd. Het ballet werd gecomponeerd voor Stephen Petronio, ter gelegenheid van het 25 jarige bestaan van diens balletgezelschap. De instrumenten van het ensemble dienen wij ons voor te stellen als de eigenzinnige bewoners van een dorpje aan zee. De muziek ontwikkelt zich spiraalsgewijs tot een geduchte storm, om uiteindelijk uit te doven in de zang van een kinderkoor. (HJ)
