Het lijkt tegenwoordig mode om recital-cd’s te koppelen aan een thema, zo ook DivaDivo. De stem van Joyce DiDonato behoort tot de lyrische mezzosopranen, een stemtype dat bij uitstek geschikt is voor het zingen van zogenaamde ‘trouser roles’. In de opera wordt de rol van jonge mannelijke, net seksueel ontwaakte adolescent vaak toebedeeld aan een vrouw die daarvoor een broek moet aantrekken, vandaar de term ‘broekrol’. Het idee achter DivaDivo is een aantal beroemde operaverhalen te vertellen aan de hand van vrouwelijke rollen en mannelijke travestierollen. Belangrijkste doel is natuurlijk de veelzijdigheid te laten horen van DiDonato, niet alleen wat betreft emotionele reikwijdte maar ook wat betreft diversiteit aan muziekstijlen. Dat is best veel gevraagd, niet alleen van DiDonato, ook van het orkest want wellicht zouden de aria’s van Mozart en Gluck met een gespecialiseerd orkest beter tot hun recht komen. Maar laat geen verkeerde indruk gewekt worden. Joyce DiDonato is een van de beste operazangeressen van dit moment. Genoeg reden om de cd te waarderen. (CP)
