Album

Salisbury Cathedral, in het graafschap Wilshire, mag zich verheugen in een ononderbroken lijn van liturgische koorzang, teruggaand tot 1258. Eigenlijk gaat de traditie nog verder terug. Ook voor die tijd had de regio een bisschopszetel, namelijk in Old Sarum. Alles bij elkaar gaat het om een historie van meer dan negen eeuwen, sinds de oprichting van het allereerste jongenskoor van Old Sarum. De tijden zijn uiteraard veranderd: momenteel beschikt de huidige kathedraal ook over een meisjeskoor, al wil men van een vermenging van jongens- en meisjesstemmen nog niet weten. Vandaar dat we hier alleen jongens en mannen horen. Deze cd is de tweede in een reeks met alle psalmen, volgens de Anglicaanse traditie (chant) op het label Priory. De chants van deze cd werden o.a. gecomponeerd door Samuel Sebastian Wesley, Thomas Attwookd, Frederick Ouseley en Cyril Musgrove. Zelfs de grote Beethoven komt voorbij, geciteerd in Psalm 23 van John Stainer. (HJ)
