Radiocoryfeeën als Frits Spits, Giel Beelen en Jan-Douwe Kroeske zijn al om. Nu moet de rest van Nederland nog vallen voor The New Shining. Het zou tijd worden, want de twee kernleden van de groep (zanger/gitarist Max en bassist R) spelen al zo’n twintig jaar samen. Recent podiumsucces (onder meer als voorprogramma van Golden Earring) moet nu ook op cd zijn weerslag vinden. Daartoe nam de groep geen halve maatregelen twee cd’s met 25 nummers: oftewel tweeënhalf uur muziek. De eerst cd staat vol met melodieuze rock waar we de band van kennen, maar op cd twee kiest het trio voor een akoestische aanpak. Het zijn juist in die nummers dat het talent van Nax als songschrijver boven komen drijven. Ook een andere specialiteit van de band, de messcherpe koortjes, komen in deze songs goed uit de verf. The New Shining klonk nog nooit zo persoonlijk. Dat komt de groep alleen maar ten goede op hun derde album, hun beste tot nu toe. (PdK)
