De muziek van Parry is waarschijnlijk ook in Engeland niet algemeen bekend. En dat terwijl zijn prachtige Jerusalem al bijna de status van een tweede volkslied heeft, zo vaak is het gezongen bij bruiloften, bijeenkomsten en politieke manifestaties. Ook de rest van Perry's oeuvre verdient echter erkenning. Zo denkt althans prins Charles, wiens familie nog al eens terugvalt op het meer ceremoniële deel van Parry's muziek. Of het zal helpen, deze aanbeveling (zie booklet) vanuit het establishment door iemand die zich ook al bemoeide met moderne architectuur en het ontgiften van het lichaam middels een mengsel van artisjokken en paardenbloemen? Vast wel, want ironisch genoeg klinkt Jerusalem hier in een versie die juist zeer anti-establishment is. Parry sympathiseerde namelijk met het vrouwenkiesrecht, vandaar dat hij in 1918 een orkestraal arrangement van Jerusalem maakte voor een Suffrage Demonstration Concert in de Queen's Hall. Het belang van deze cd rust – behalve in de kwaliteit van de uitvoeringen – vooral in de breedte waarin Parry hier wordt gepresenteerd: pracht en praal in het schitterende Te Deum, lichtvoetigheid in de toneelmuziek, somber in de The Glories of Our Blood And State, etc.. Er valt hier veel te ontdekken. Fraai is bijvoorbeeld de Entr'acte uit de The Birds. Het is een betoverend Wagneriaans sprookje dat ergens aan Humperdincks – eveneensWagneriaans geïnspireerde – Hänsel und Gretel doet denken. (HJ)
