Tragische verhalen te over bij de eerste generatie rock-n’-rollers en het leven van Gene Vincent vormt daar geen uitzondering op. Nog voor zijn doorbraak als popzanger werd Vincent aangereden door een dronken automobilist waardoor hij de rest van zijn leven mank liep. Vijf jaar later, hij was inmiddels een succesvol artiest, raakte hij nog een keer betrokken bij een auto-ongeluk. Zijn twintigjarige medepassagier (en collega-rocker) Eddie Cochran verloor daarbij zijn leven. Die ellende is op deze geremasterde heruitgave slechts hoorbaar voor de toegewijde luisteraar. Gene Vincent zong immers goedgeluimde rock-n’-roll maar hij deed dat wel met een venijn in zijn stem, dat wellicht valt terug te voeren op zijn woelige verleden. Deze cd verzamelt het tweede en derde album (plus acht bonustracks) dat de zanger uitbracht. Zijn grootste hit Be-Bop-A-Lula is één van die acht extra nummers. Vincent is op zijn best in spannende songs als het onheilspellende Jezebel of Cat Man waarin hij agressief zijn klauwen uitslaat. Voor een ieder die het werk van deze enigszins vergeten rock-n’rollpionier beter willen leren kennen, krijgt met deze cd het juiste repertoire voorgeschoteld. (PdK)
