De dichteres Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) behoort tot de meest fascinerende figuren van de moderne tijd. Haar levenswijze was zeer teruggetrokken. Kennelijk had ze het isolement nodig om aan haar unieke oeuvre te slijpen. Ze schreef ruwweg zo'n 1800 veelal korte fragmentarische gedichtjes, zonder titels en vaak met eigenzinnige liggende streepjes ('Better – than Music! For I – who heard it – I was used – to the Birds – before – ', zo opent 503). Deze ogenschijnlijk lyrische gevalletjes waren qua inhoud soms opvallend bondig en gespierd, alsof ze aan een vlindervleugel genoeg had om een mokerslag uit de delen. Sopraan Julia Faulkner stelde een cd samen met toonzettingen van Dickinsons eigenzinnige poëzie. Ze rangschikte de liederen rond een aantal belangrijke thema's: natuur, identiteit, liefde, dood, onsterfelijkheid. Aaron Copland ontbreekt hier uiteraard niet. Negen van zijn Twelve Songs of Emily Dickinson zijn hier verspreid over het recital te vinden. (HJ)
