Frank Zappa Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall is de volledige weerslag (inclusief voorprogramma) van twee concerten die Frank Zappa en zijn Mothers Of Invention gaven in deze historische New Yorkse concertzaal op 11 oktober 1971. In die tijd werd de groep voorgestaan door de twee lijvige en kolderieke zangers Mark Volman en Howard Kaylan, waarmee Zappa datzelfde jaar de speelfilm 200 Motels maakte. De lolmakerij van het illustere zangduo domineert het concert in bijvoorbeeld een tot bijna vijftig minuten uitgerekte versie van Billy The Mountain. De twintig minuten durende suite Divan verscheen nimmer op plaat maar kenners zullen er veel fragmenten uit herkennen van latere songs. Gelukkig staan er naast al die lolbroekerij ook een aantal bezielde instrumentale stukken en improvisaties op Carnegie Hall, ditmaal met hoofdrollen voor topmuzikanten als rietblazer/toetsenist Ian Underwood, toetsenist Don Preston en natuurlijk Zappa zelf. Het maakt deze vier cd's in al hun rommeligheid tot onontbeerlijk materiaal voor iedere Zappa-liefhebber. (MR)
