Leo Blokhuis The sound of the westcoast 1965-1979

Met de Westcoast sound wordt vooral de groep artiesten aangeduid die in de vroege jaren zeventig softrock en folkrock combineerde met country & western en strakke vocale harmonieën. The Eagles waren daarin de grootsten met in hun kielzog namen als Jackson Browne en Linda Ronstadt. Popprofessor Leo Blokhuis maakt er geen geheim van groot fan te zijn van de muziek uit Los Angeles en presenteert nu, op zijn gebruikelijke aanstekelijke wijze, vier cd's vol Westcoast muziek, verpakt in een informatief boekwerk. Eerdergenoemde namen verschijnen pas op de vierde cd maar kwamen natuurlijk niet uit het niets tevoorschijn. Blokhuis begint daarom in het Los Angeles van 1965 met baanbrekende groepen als The Byrds en Buffalo Springfield. Aandacht is er ook voor de beroemde sessieband The Wrecking Crew die huishield in de studio's annex hitfabrieken waar bands zelden hun platen zelf inspeelden. Blokhuis mikt op een groot publiek en houdt de muziek luisterbaar, dus wel Little Feat en Tom Waits maar geen Frank Zappa en Captain Beefheart. Deze smetteloze collectie kan zo, integraal op ieder classic rock radiostation gedraaid worden. (MR)
