De muziek van deze cd behoort tot het minder bekende deel van Holsts oeuvre, zoals vrijwel alles van hem tot het minder bekende deel van zijn oeuvre behoort. Jammer is dat wel, want de hier opgenomen bundels uit de Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda liggen zeker binnen het bereik van een goed amateur kamerkoor (althans wat de vrouwenstemmen betreft). En waarom niet: beide bundels vormen een zeldzame, maar hoogwaardige aanvulling op het beperkte repertoire voor vrouwenkoor, vergelijkbaar met de vrouwenkoren van Brahms en Laudi alla Vergine (Quattro Pezzi Sacri) van Verdi. Holst wijdde zich aan deze Vedische hymnen in de jaren 1900-1912, mede onder invloed van zijn theosofische stiefmoeder. Hij vond de bestaande Engelse vertalingen echter zo ouderwets en prozaïsch dat hij de moeite nam om zelf lessen in Sanskriet te nemen, ga er maar aanstaan. Zijn vaardigheid met betrekking tot het componeren voor vrouwenkoor dankte hij aan zijn ervaringen als docent. Te beginnen in 1905, toen hij leraar werd aan de James Allen's Girls School in Dulwich. Vanaf 1907 tot aan zijn dood was hij tevens Director of Music aan de St Paul's Girl's School in Londen. (HJ)
