In 1967 was Bob Dylan herstellende van zijn veelbesproken motorongeluk. In die tijd maakte hij in diverse woonhuizen tientallen ruwe demo’s met The Band , een groep Canadezen die hem in 1965 had begeleid op zijn eveneens veelbesproken eerste elektrische tournee. En de fans en critici bleven praten, want ook de informele opnamesessies vormden een fascinerend onderdeel van Dylans oeuvre. De nummers lekten uit en werden massaal illegaal verspreid op de eerste populaire bootlegs. Een aantal songs leverden andere artiesten als Manfred Mann en The Byrds hits op. Acht jaar later werd een deel alsnog uitgegeven op het dubbelalbum The Basement Tapes (1975). Het bonte allegaartje putte uit de rijke bron van de Amerikaanse traditie en was van grote invloed op rootsy singer/songwriters en americana-bands. Dylan en The Band verkeerden in topvorm en maakten een handvol klassiekers (I Shall Be Released, Million Dollar Bash, This Wheel’s On Fire), maar maakten ook veel plezier met lollige covers. In 2014 werden nog veel meer sessies officieel uitgegeven in een box met zes cd’s en een iets bescheidener dubbelaar. Toch knap voor opnames die met goedkope apparatuur werden gemaakt en waarschijnlijk nooit waren bedoeld voor het grote publiek. (JE)
