Central Band of the Royal Air Force British classics

Album

De Central Band van de Royal Air Force speelt een unieke rol in het Britse openbare leven. De Band stond altijd al vooraan bij belangrijke evenementen, zoals het wisselen van de wacht bij Buckingham Palace, koninklijke huwelijken en de Olympische Spelen in Londen van 2012. Ook op het concertpodium behoren deze blazers tot de absolute top. In 1955 waren zij zelfs de eerste militaire band die een langspeelplaat uitbrachten (Eric Coates' The Dambuster March). Hun cd met de titel British Classics laat niet alleen horen hoe goed dit harmonieorkest is, maar ook hoe goed 'militaire' muziek kan zijn. De meeste componisten van deze cd associëren we niet direct met harmoniemuziek, laat staan met Harer Majesteits Luchtmacht. Toch behoren deze veelal volksmuziekbewerkingen vaak tot het beste van hun oeuvre. De Eerste Suite op.28 van Gustav Holst (1909) is zo'n aanstekelijk meesterwerk dat de gangbare sleetse potpourri’s ver achter zich liet. Ook de Lincolnshire Posy (1937, voor de American Bandmasters' Association ) van Percy Grainger zindert van originaliteit. De Central Band of the Royal Air Force werd door het label Chandos met egards behandeld. Het booklet is hier al bijna een boek, waarvan de omvang in zijn geheel werd ingeruimd voor de Engelstalige toelichtingen. (HJ)
