Een goede beat is vaak dansbaar. Kun je niet lekker bewegen op dance of r&b, dan stelt deze muziek eigenlijk teleur. Ook bij hiphop is ritme erg belangrijk. Rappers vragen aan producers om beats waar ze makkelijk overheen kunnen rappen. Hiphopproducer en filmcomponist Adrian Younge breekt deze gouden regel niet, maar wil meer bereiken. Hij wil muziek maken die een verhaal vertelt, zoals filmmuziek dat ook doet. Zijn project Twelve Reasons To Die met rapper Ghostface Killah is eigenlijk een film zonder plaatjes. Deze cd bevat het tweede deel, de vervolgfilm. Younge maakt muziek die doet denken aan de jaren zeventig, Ghostface Killah rapt over die tijd. Het verhaal speelt zich af in New York en gaat over afrekeningen in het criminele circuit. Het is razend knap dat ook de instrumentale stukken, op een aparte cd te horen, al heel beeldend zijn. En dan speelt Younge ook nog alles zelf: drums, toetsen, gitaren en diverse blaasinstrumenten. Je kunt druk met je hoofd knikken op deze hiphop-opera. Maar vergeet vooral niet het verhaal te volgen.
