Veel fans van Bob Dylan zijn geobsedeerd met het werk van de singer/songwriter. Eind jaren 60 werden al op grote schaal illegale lp's verspreid met onbekende opnames van Dylan. Deze zogenaamde bootlegs lieten nummers horen die de Amerikaan niet had willen uitbrengen. Na jaren deze illegale handel te hebben aangezien, begonnen Dylan en zijn label in 1991 The Bootleg Series. Zo konden zij toch nog geld verdienen aan de onstilbare honger van Dylans trouwste fans. Sindsdien verschijnen er regelmatig albums vol demo's, afgekeurde opnames en live-uitvoeringen. Volume 12 behandelt de sessies uit de periode 1965-1966. Een stormachtige tijd waarin Dylan elektrisch ging spelen en drie klassieke albums uitbracht. The Bootleg Series hebben al eerder dit tijdvak behandeld. Interessante sessies van bijvoorbeeld Like A Rolling Stone en Tombstone Blues staan dus al op eerdere Bootlegs. Toch blijft het leuk om deze overbekende nummers in een andere versie te horen. Ook voor niet geobsedeerde fans is The Cutting Edge een machtig tijdsdocument. (JE)
