Eric Bibb The happiest man in the world

Eric Bibb is een gezegend mens. Deze Amerikaanse bluesfolkzanger en -gitarist groeide op in een gezin waar Pete Seeger en Bob Dylan over de vloer kwamen. De laatste gaf hem ook zijn eerste muzikale advies (‘keep it simple’). Hij is gezegend met een warme baritonstem en soepele vibrato en doet soms denken aan John Lee Hooker . Maar het grote verschil tussen deze twee: Bibb is ‘the happiest man in the world’. En dat zullen we weten via zijn nimmer aflatende feelgoodsongs waarin nog geen spatje regen valt. In zijn nieuwe thuisland Finland vormde hij de band Eric Bibb & North Country Far. Vervolgens benaderde hij de legendarische Britse bassist Danny Thompson . Deze speelde in de jaren zeventig met gekwelde zielen als Nick Drake , Bert Jansch en John Martyn . Het lukte hem niet om meer inhoud te geven aan de muziek van Bibb. Deze is als een kerk waarin alles, zonder enige verdieping, bij voorbaat ‘halleluja’ is. (MR)
