'The Legend of the Flying Dutchman' volgt nauwgezet de opbouw en de plot zoals deze door Richard Wagner is gemaakt voor zijn beroemde opera met dezelfde naam. Deze compositie heeft de vorm van een ouverture met drie aktes. Net als in een opera zijn er momenten van drama, spanning en ontspanning, solo's, duo's, trio's en tutti's van het gehele orkest. Er zijn verschillende leitmotieven; terugkomende ideeën die geassocieerd worden met bepaalde karakters of stemmingen in het verhaal. Alle subtitels binnen elke akte komen van de openings teksten van Wagners opera. De enige muziek van Wagner die is verwerkt in deze compositie is het beroemde hoorn-motief. Martin Ellerby heeft een finale toegevoegd met de titel 'The Ascent to Heaven'. In deze finale komen alle contrasterende motieven samen in een langgerekte processie naar de hemelse sferen
