De Amerikaanse drummer en componist Matt Wilson bestiert als bandleider een drietal uiteenlopende bands. Leden van het Matt Wilson Quartet, Wilson’s Arts & Crafts en Christmas Tree-O komen nu samen als Big Happy Family om zijn in 2014 overleden vrouw Felicia Lynn Wilson te herdenken. Zij was actief als violiste en ieder bandlid kende haar goed. Het even treffend als poëtisch getitelde Beginning Of A Memory is dan ook een liefdevol album waar geïnspireerd spel van afspat. Als geheel doet het denken aan een begrafenis in New Orleans, begeleid door een band die zowel treurig als vrolijk speelt. Plechtig klinken treurmarsen als Flowers For Felicia en July Hymn, maar er wordt ook uitbundig en in opgewekte tempi gespeeld. Die grillige stukken doen soms denken aan de big bandmuziek van Charles Mingus . Een eerbetoon dat, ook zonder voorkennis, een mooi jazzalbum oplevert. (MR)
