Het dubbelalbum Uncle Meat van The Mothers Of Invention verscheen in 1969. Hoewel de doowop-rariteit Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (1968) tussendoor verscheen, is het de waardige opvolger van Frank Zappa’s eerste mijlpaal We’re Only In It For The Money (1968). Uncle Meat pikt de draad hiervan op en laat zich beluisteren als een wilde collage of suite van complexe freak-muziek, elektronische geluiden en stemmen. Zappa toonde zich een meester in de studio en knipte, plakte, bewerkte en manipuleerde talloze opnames (live en in studio’s opgenomen) tot een even rauw als levendig en experimenteel geheel. Hoogtepunt is de stomende jazzrock van de King Kong-suite, dat oorspronkelijk heel kant vier besloeg. Een begeleidend filmproject was minder succesvol en verscheen pas in 1987 om snel weer vergeten te worden. Uncle Meat is het meest complete album van de originele groep The Mothers Of Invention, zoals deze bestond tot 1970. Meat Light bevat, naast het originele album, nog een uitgebreidere versie, zoals oorspronkelijk door Zappa samengesteld. Een verzameling outtakes uit de Zappa Vault maakt deze officiële heruitgave compleet. (MR)
